Using molecular orbital theory and hybridization theory, predict the following for Li2:

a. magnetism: para vs dia
b. Bond Order and existence of the species
c. hybridization
d. molecular geometry
e. number of sigma and pi bonds

  5. a) diamagnetic since Li has 1 electron so Li2 will have 2 electrons and both will be paired.
    b) bond order is 1 because two pairs of electrons are bonding and none are antibonding, therefore (2-0)/2 is 1, and it exists.
    c) sp hybridized
    d) linear molecular structure
    e) since there are only one pair of bonding electrons and that pair is a single bond, there will therefore be 1 sigma and no pi bonds.
